UAE looks to embrace PM Modi's visit, saying it aligns with tolerance

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming two-day visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is poised to mark a significant milestone in the bilateral relations between the two nations.

The UAE sees PM Modi’s scheduled visit on February 13-14 as holding special significance, as it coincides with the inauguration of the BAPS Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi.

This event underscores the shared values of tolerance and acceptance that guide the relationship between India and the UAE, said Abdulnasser Alshaali, the UAE's Ambassador to India.

In an interview given to The Indian Express, Alshaali, described the visit as a testament to the enduring friendship between the two countries. He emphasized the symbolic importance of the temple inauguration, highlighting its role in showcasing the cultural diversity of the Indian diaspora in the UAE, which constitutes the largest expatriate community with a population of 3.5 million.

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President, Prime Minister, and Defence Minister of the UAE.

The discussions will focus on further deepening and strengthening the strategic partnership between the two nations, as well as exchanging views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.

In addition to the bilateral meetings, Prime Minister Modi will participate as a Guest of Honour at the World Government Summit 2024 in Dubai, where he will deliver a special keynote address. The summit presents an opportunity to explore avenues for collaboration and innovation on a global scale.

The UAE-India bilateral relationship has witnessed significant growth in recent years, with both countries emerging as top trading partners. The bilateral trade between the two nations amounted to approximately US$ 85 billion in 2022-23, highlighting the robust economic ties.

The signing of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in February 2022 and the establishment of a Local Currency Settlement (LCS) System in July 2023 further underscore the commitment to enhancing economic cooperation and facilitating cross-border transactions.

Ambassador Alshaali emphasized the importance of increasing aviation links to bolster investment and trade opportunities between the two countries. He also highlighted the significant contributions of the Indian diaspora to the development of the UAE, underscoring the personal familiarity and understanding that form the foundation of the close government-to-government ties.

Both countries share a mutual interest in promoting peace and stability at regional and international levels, with a commitment to working closely together in addressing common challenges.

India's political stability, especially as the general elections approach, has been viewed favourably by the UAE. Prime Minister Modi's leadership is recognized as essential in fostering strong partnerships and collaboration between the two countries.

The visit of Prime Minister Modi to the UAE signifies a reaffirmation of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations. It sets the stage for further collaboration across various sectors, including trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
