Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir has stirred a fresh political row by proposing to rebuild the Babri Masjid in Beldanga, Murshidabad.
The announcement, made during a gathering at a local madrassa, coincides with December 6, the anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992. The proposal has drawn sharp criticism from the opposition BJP in West Bengal.
Kabir, speaking at the event, emphasized the emotional significance of the proposal to the local community. "During a jalsa-mehfil at a madrassa in Beldanga, I suggested rebuilding the Babri Masjid here to honor the sentiments of those present. We plan to create a cast of the structure and, through community donations, build a new Babri Masjid in Beldanga by December 6 next year," he stated.
This isn’t the first time Kabir has been at the center of controversy. The MLA, who represents the Bharatpur Assembly constituency in Murshidabad, has a history of provocative remarks. Earlier this year, he faced backlash for a hate speech in which he threatened to "toss BJP cadres into the Bhagirathi river." Although the party censured him for the comments, the incident escalated when actor-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty responded with a similarly controversial statement.
Kabir's political career has seen ups and downs. He was previously expelled from the Trinamool Congress but later rejoined and secured his seat in the Assembly.
