Toddler among two killed in Vasai building collapse in Maharashtra

Mumbai: Two people, including a toddler, were killed and nine others injured when part of a residential building collapsed in Vasai, Palghar district, late on Tuesday night, officials said.

The incident occurred around 12.05 a.m. when the rear section of the four-storey Ramabai Apartment on Narangi Road gave way and fell onto an adjoining chawl. Rescue teams pulled 11 people from the rubble, two of whom later died. The deceased were identified as 24-year-old Aarohi Omkar Jovil and a child, Utkarsha Jovil.

The injured were taken to Riddhi Vinayak Hospital, Prakriti Hospital, Chandansar Hospital and Sanjeevani Hospital in Virar and Nalasopara. Several of them are reported to be in a serious condition.

Teams from the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation Fire Department and two units of the National Disaster Response Force are carrying out search and rescue operations at the site. Structural engineers are also inspecting the damaged building to determine further risks.

Officials noted that the collapse came as heavy rains have been battering parts of Maharashtra. The India Meteorological Department has forecast widespread rainfall across the state, with thunderstorms and strong winds expected. Yellow and orange alerts have been issued for 25 districts, including Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.

The IMD has urged residents in these areas to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel through flood-prone zones, and follow safety advisories.

Further updates on the Vasai building collapse are awaited as rescue operations continue.
