Building collapses in Delhi's Satya Niketan, several feared trapped

New Delhi: A building collapsed in south Delhi's Satya Niketan area on Sunday, with several people feared trapped under the debris, officials said.

The building collapsed near Shiv Mandir in Satya Niketan, in the Moti Bagh area.

The Delhi Fire Brigade said it received information about the incident at around 1.30 pm. At around 1.50 pm, Station Officer (STO) Narender reached the spot and reported that a building had collapsed and some people were trapped under the debris. He sought the deployment of senior officers and additional manpower.

Following this, an SWT, a Big Fire Tender (BFT), an Officer-in-Charge, DO Mukesh Verma and STO Manoj were sent to the site.

Delhi Police said a rescue operation had been launched at the spot. Officials said the exact number of people trapped would be confirmed later.

The incident comes after a similar building collapse in Delhi's Karol Bagh area last month, in which one person was killed and three others were injured when a two-storey building collapsed during demolition work.

According to a preliminary enquiry, the building was being demolished by a private contractor engaged by its owners. Officials said the contractor had not obtained permission from the concerned agency to carry out the demolition.

The building suddenly collapsed during the demolition work, trapping labourers at the site.

The incident was reported to Karol Bagh Police Station at around 11.15 am from Pyare Lal Road in Regarpura. On receiving the information, police personnel immediately reached the spot and began rescue efforts.

Police said four labourers were injured in the incident. One of them, Sheikh Shamshad, succumbed to his injuries. His body was shifted to the mortuary at Lady Hardinge Medical College Hospital.

Among the three other injured workers, Md. Ayub suffered serious injuries, including a head injury and a fracture of the right hand. He was referred to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where his condition was reported to be critical.

Sheikh Saidul sustained limb injuries and is undergoing treatment at Jeevan Mala Hospital, while Rafik-Ul suffered minor injuries and subsequently left for his residence.

Police and fire services carried out rescue operations and ensured that the injured workers were taken to hospitals for treatment.

The building owners and the contractor were detained for questioning.
