Kolkata: Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee suffered a head injury after being mobbed outside Chanditala police station in Hooghly district on Sunday while submitting a memorandum protesting the arrest of party workers following the Assembly elections, party sources said.
Banerjee, the Sreerampore MP, alleged he was struck on the head by BJP supporters as a group waved black flags and shouted “thief” at him and the TMC delegation. He was seen holding a cloth to the back of his head and accused the police of failing to act. A large contingent of police and central forces was deployed to prevent further escalation after the incident.
“All this happened in front of the police. I was hit on my head, and I am bleeding,” Banerjee told reporters as he staged a dharna and vowed the TMC would continue protests against what it called “BJP sponsored attacks.” The BJP denied the allegations, saying locals were simply expressing anger at TMC leaders.
The attack on Kalyan Banerjee comes a day after TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee was pelted with stones and eggs in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas. Abhishek, the Diamond Harbour MP, was reportedly assaulted by a mob while visiting victims of post poll violence; aides helped him escape and he briefly received treatment at a private hospital. Supporters said he was targeted by BJP activists, while the BJP rejected those claims.
