Third blast in Punjab occurs near Golden Temple, 5 arrested

New Delhi/Amritsar: Five people have been arrested following a ‘low-intensity explosion’ near the Golden Temple in Amritsar, in Punjab on late Wednesday night.

The third explosion in five days occurred at around 1 am near Heritage Street in Amritsar.

‘Amritsar low-intensity explosion cases solved,’ NDTV quoted the Director General of Punjab Police as saying.

The blast in the wee hours of Thursday took place nearly two kilometres from Heritage Street near the Golden Temple, which is a popular tourist spot in the city.

Initiating probe into the blast, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Punjab Police reportedly collected forensic samples from the site.

The first explosion that grabbed national attention occurred on May 6, which followed another on Monday.

Preliminary reports say that no triggering mechanism was used for explosion; however explosive used in the blasts contained two health drink cans, according to the report.

The explosion on Monday left one person with injuries and the police said the explosive used in the blast was stored in a container.

One person was injured in the blast on May 6 alongside damaging the glass façade of some buildings, the report said.
