Hyderabad: A 25-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide at her home in Sangareddy district, Telangana, on Thursday, reportedly due to a fear of ants (myrmecophobia), police said.
The incident occurred on November 4. The woman, married in 2022 and mother to a three-year-old daughter, was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a sari. Police said she had suffered from fear of ants since childhood and had previously sought counselling at a hospital in her native Mancherial town.
According to authorities, she had dropped her daughter at a relative’s home that morning, saying she would return after cleaning. Her husband, who was at work, found the main door locked when he returned in the evening. With help from neighbours, he broke the door and discovered his wife hanging.
A suicide note recovered at the scene read: “Sri, I am sorry, I cannot live with these ants. Take care of [daughter]. Be careful. Annavaram, Tirupati Rs 1,116… don’t forget Yellamma vadi biyyam.” Police suggested that she may have encountered ants while cleaning, leading to the extreme action.
A case has been registered at Ameenpur police station, and further investigation is underway.
