Jammu: Police arrested a suspect Wednesday evening following shots fired at a private function attended by National Conference president Farooq Abdullah and Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary in Jammu.
The incident unfolded as the leaders departed the venue. It's unclear if the gunfire targeted the VVIPs.
Security personnel swiftly overpowered the accused, identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, and took him into custody. Senior officers rushed to the scene, launching a probe into the motive and circumstances.
J&K Police stated: “An incident of firing was reported at a function where JKNC chief Farooq Abdullah and Deputy CM Surinder Choudhary were present. One person has been arrested. More details are awaited.”
The 89-year-old Abdullah, a revered national leader under NSG protection due to intelligence-assessed threats, heads the National Conference. He served as J&K Chief Minister multiple times from 1982-2002 and Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy from 2009-2014. Son of first elected CM Sheikh Abdullah, he is father to current Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
