Sudarshan TV resident editor arrested for tweeting Police succumbing to Al-Jazeera TV’s pressure

Gurugram: Mukesh Kumar, the resident editor of Sudarshan News, who was arrested for tweeting that Gurugram Police were apprehending Hindus under pressure from the Qatar-based Al Jazeera channel following the communal clashes in Haryana, was allegedly released after the editor-in-chief of the channel warned the police of a big announcement if Kumar was not released.

Mukesh Kumar, in a tweet, accused Gurugram Police of succumbing to pressure from Qatar-based Al Jazeera News Channel. Alleging that Al Jazeera had contacted Gurugram Police Commissioner Kala Ramachandran to instigate action against Hindus in relation to the communal discord, Kumar's post drew sharp condemnation.

In response, the Gurugram Police termed Kumar's claims as "baseless, false, and misleading," subsequently initiating legal proceedings against him under the IT Act.

Soon after Kumar’s arrest, the channel claimed that he was kidnapped by some ‘goons’. It was later clarified by Gurugram Police that Kumar had been arrested by the Cyber Crime division.

Sudarshan News asserted that Kumar had been visiting Mewat to provide assistance to Hindu activists, countering the arrest with claims of his abduction by "goons." The news channel vehemently supported Kumar, declaring his arrest as an attack on media freedom.

Suresh Chavhanke, the editor-in-chief of Sudarshan News, raised pointed questions about Kumar's detention, questioning the circumstances and expressing concerns over governmental compliance.

Amid heightened tensions in Nuh, mobile internet and SMS services were further suspended until Sunday to maintain public order. A total of 393 arrests have been made, with 118 individuals placed under preventive detention in connection with the ongoing investigation into the violence.
