Security beefed up in Punjab after Amritpal Singh's Baisakhi call

Bathinda (Punjab): Police beefed up security in Bathinda after a video of controversial Khalistani preacher Amritpal Singh began circulating asking his followers to congregate for Baisakhi celebrations on April 14.

Amritpal, who heads the ‘Waris Punjab De’,asked people to discuss issues that matter in front of the Sikh community.

Additional Director General of Police, Surinder Pal Singh Parmar said the security arrangement shows the situation is normal in Punjab, according to NDTV.

"We have made elaborate security arrangements. We are here for the convenience of people. We want more and more people to visit the state on Baisakhi. It will send out a positive message that the situation is normal in Punjab. No restrictions have been imposed," the ADGP reportedly said.

Reports previously said that the fugitive leader of Waris Punjab De was likely to surrender at the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

On April 2 Deputy Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, Parminder Singh Bhandal said police would help the leader surrender in accordance with the law.

Speculations regarding his surrender came after Amritpal Singh in a video said that he was not a ‘fugitive’ and added that he would ‘ appear in front of the world’ soon.

He asked people to get rid of their minds the idea that he had run away leaving behind his friends.

After the Punjab Police started crackdown on the group, Amritpal singh has been on run the since March 18.

Police started chasing the group three weeks after Amritpal's supporters attacked the Ajnala police station in Amritsar on February 23 asking to release Lovepreet Toofan.
