SC provides protection to Nupur Sharma from arrest over remarks on Prophet

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has provided protection to suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma from arrest over her derogatory statements against Prophet Mohammed.

The Court also urged various states to consider her request to call all the nine cases related to the remarks to a single one.

Appearing on behalf of Ms Sharma, advocate Maninder Singh stated that she was getting threats to her life after the Supreme Court made criticising observation on July 1.

Responding to her plea, Justice Surya Kant, who came on her heavily for her remarks, said that the threats to her life necessitates immediate action to protect her life and liberty.

In the July 1 hearing, the Supreme Court had said Nupur Sharma should apologise to the country for triggering tension with her comments.

The Supreme Court will take up Nupur Sharma's request on August 10 and until then, no new cases can be filed.

Delhi, Maharashtra, Telengana, West Bengal, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Assam are the states that have been asked to respond to her case.
