Hyderabad: A wave of protest swept over the old city area including Charminar in Hyderabad last night demanding stern action against the suspended BJP MLA T Raja Singh who is out on bail after being arrested for allegedly insulting the prophet in a YouTube video.
Police used batons to disperse thronging crowds of protesters who shouted religious slogans and burnt effigies and threw stones, according to NDTV.
T Raja Singh is facing charges on hurting religious sentiments and promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion.
The court nevertheless granted him bail rejecting a police request for his custody.
In the thick of the churning protests continuing for the past two days, BJP leadership suspended the lawmaker, serving him a notice to explain why should not be expelled from the party.
Police intensified security in the city after protests erupted again on Tuesday night when Singh was released on bail.
The social media platform where Singh posted the 10-minute video which allegedly insulted Prophet Muhammad was taken down following the protests.
Singh's video was an answer to comedian Munawar Faruqui's show recently which Singh tried to disrupt.
He asked why the insult of Ram and Sita could pass off as comedy but not of other figures revered by other communities, said the report.
Mr Singh's controversial comments came months after former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma triggered widespread protest with her comments on the Prophet.
