Santishree Pandit gets appointed as JNU's 1st woman VC

New Delhi: The Jawaharlal Nehru University gets it first woman Vice-Chancellor after Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit got appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor, PTI reported.

The Ministry of Education informed that she was appointed for a period of five years. Santishree is currently the Vice-Chancellor of Savitribai Phule University of Pune/.

The VC post of JNU was held by M Jagadesh Kumar as acting VC. Last week, he got the appointment as the chairman of the University Grants Commission. Jagadesh's tenure as JNU VC witnessed many controversies, such as the sedition row in 2016, the lockdown of his office more than once, and in 2019, Human Resource Development minister got stuck for six hours at the JNU Convocation venue etc. It was a week after he was appointed VC here in 2016 the JNU administration had stopped an event organized against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. It kick-started some of the controversies during Jagadesh's tenure.
