Rahul Gandhi's Twitter account restored after a week-long suspension

Twitter on Saturday restored the account of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after a week of suspension. However, the principal opposition party has accused the microblogging platform of bias.

Deeming it a violation of its rules, Twitter suspended his profile last week for tweeting the pictures of the family of a nine-year-old victim of alleged rape and murder in Northwest Delhi. The accounts of leaders who also shared the pictures have been restored.

"Rahul Gandhi's Twitter account has been unlocked," a party functionary said.

Rahul Gandhi on Friday slammed Twitter for interfering with the national political process. He added that shutting down accounts is an attack on the country's democratic structure,

He further alleged that the platform is not a neutral and objective platform and was beholden to the government in a YouTube video titled "Twitter's dangerous game". He also alleged that the company was denying millions of his followers the right to an opinion. It is unfair, he added.

"It's obvious now that Twitter is actually not a neutral, objective platform. It is a biased platform. It's something that listens to what the government of the day says," Gandhi had alleged.

Following the rift with the party, Twitter has transferred Manish Maheshwari, its head in India, to the US as a Senior Director (Revenue Strategy and Operations). An FIR was registered in UP against Maheshwari in connection with a probe related to a video of an alleged hate crime. However, Twitter did not specify any reason for the change.
