Presidential candidates Droupadi Murmu, Yashwant Sinha's nomination papers found in order

NEW DELHI: The Rajya Sabha Secretariat on Thursday said it had found the nomination papers of NDA candidate Droupadi Murmu and Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha to be in order for the July 18 presidential election.

Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Mody, the returning officer for the elections, said that out of 115 nominations received for the Presidential election, 28 were rejected on the presentation itself.

He said that out of the remaining 87 papers of 72 candidates for the presidential election, 79 were rejected as they did not meet the required criteria.

The final list of candidates will be published in the Gazette after July 2, the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers.

In addition to Murmu and Sinha, several ordinary people have also submitted their papers for the highest constitutional office in the country, including a slum dweller from Mumbai sharing the name of RJD founder Lalu Prasad Yadav, a Tamil Nadu social activist and professor from Delhi.

The Election Commission has made it mandatory for nominees to have at least 50 members in the Electoral College as Proposers and another 50 as Seconders.

Ahead of the 11th presidential election in 1997, the number of proposers and seconders was increased from 10 to 50 when the security deposit was raised to Rs 15,000.
