Suraj Revanna, the brother of former MP Prajwal Revanna, has been remanded to the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) until July 1 following his arrest in a sexual assault case.
Suraj, a JD(S) MLC, was apprehended by police in Hassan on Sunday and subsequently transferred to CID custody by the state government.
On Sunday night, Suraj was brought to Bengaluru from Hassan and presented before the 42nd Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court (ACMM) judge, who ordered a 14-day judicial custody. The CID then sought his custody on Monday, and the court granted an eight-day remand.
The case against Suraj includes charges under IPC sections 377 (unnatural offences), 342 (wrongful confinement), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention). The complaint was filed by a 27-year-old JD(S) worker, alleging that he was sexually assaulted by Suraj at a farmhouse in Ghannikada on June 16.
Suraj Revanna, son of Holenarasipura MLA H D Revanna and grandson of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, has denied the allegations, claiming that the JD(S) worker filed a false complaint to extort ₹5 crore from him.
On Friday, police registered a case of extortion against the complainant based on a report by Suraj's close aide, Shivakumar. Shivakumar alleged that the party worker had initially demanded ₹5 crore, later reduced to ₹2 crore, to avoid lodging the complaint.
This incident follows the recent arrest of Suraj’s father for allegedly kidnapping a sexual abuse victim to prevent her from testifying against former MP Prajwal Revanna. His father is currently out on bail, while his mother, Bhavani Revanna, has secured anticipatory bail in the same case.
