Posters urging Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s son Nishant Kumar to take over the JD(U) command have appeared across Patna, setting off speculation about a possible shift within the party.
The posters, placed on streets and outside the JD(U) office, feature images of Nitish and Nishant Kumar and read, “Nitish's servant... Nishant's demand... Now take command of the party, Nishant Bhai.”
They also congratulate Nitish Kumar on being sworn in as Chief Minister for the tenth time and describe Nishant as the future leader of the party.
Nitish Kumar’s family has traditionally maintained a distance from active politics. Nishant has repeatedly shown no interest in political activities, and Nitish Kumar has consistently stated that he does not wish to push his son into politics.
The sudden appearance of these posters has therefore generated significant interest among party workers and the public.
The posters have led to conversations within the JD(U) about whether Nishant Kumar might enter politics and whether the Chief Minister is considering a generational transition in party leadership. Political observers believe Nishant’s entry could influence internal party dynamics and potentially reshape Bihar’s political landscape.
Amid the rising speculation, JD(U) National Executive President Sanjay Kumar Jha commented on December 5 that party workers, supporters, and well-wishers want Nishant to join the organisation and contribute to its work. He added that the decision rests entirely with Nishant himself.
Although there is no indication from the family about any immediate political move, many believe that if Nishant chooses to enter public life and follow his father’s path, he may eventually carve out his own space in Bihar politics. For now, the posters have injected fresh debate into the state’s political circles at a time when Nitish Kumar has consolidated his position with a historic tenth term as Chief Minister.
