Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with the 1st 'Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award' on Sunday. For his "selfless service to the country and society", the PM was honoured at the 80th annual Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Awards ceremony held at Shanmukhananda Hall in Mumbai.
The award was instituted in memory of the Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar, India's melody queen, who passed away on February 6 at the age of 92.
Modi had asked for a seat among the audience instead of on the dais, and when announced, he walked to the stage to receive the award as a commoner, IANS reported.
The entire Mangeshkar family was present at the occasion, along with Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and Minister Subhash Desai. Maharastra Chief Minister was, however, not present at the event, and his name did not figure in the official invite, IANS reported.
