Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has suspended all judicial proceedings for today to honour the passing of India's legendary singer and Bharat Ratna awardee Kata Mangeshkar who passed away on Sundays. Subordinate Courts in Maharashtra, South and North Goa, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Daman and Diu and Silvassa will remain closed on Monday, according to an official statement.
The Maharashtra government has declared February 7 as a public holiday to mourn her demise. The Centre has also announced two-day national mourning in memory of the iconic singer. As a mark of respect to Mangeshkar, a Bharat Ratna, the National Flag will fly at half-mast from February 6 to 7 throughout India.
The state of Punjab has also declared a two-day mourning period in Chandigarh, during which the Indian flag will be flown at half-mast and no official entertainment will take place.
The singer, a staple of Indian music for over seven decades, was cremated with full honours following her death from multiple organ failure in hospital. She had been diagnosed with Covid-19 and suffering from pneumonia.
Mangeshkar's funeral ceremony at Shivaji Park was attended by eminent politicians and film personalities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended in person to pay his respects to the "Nightingale of India" as did other film fraternity members such as Shahrukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Sachin Tendulkar and Shankar Mahadevan amongst many others.
"The coming generations will remember her as a stalwart of Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unparalleled ability to mesmerise people," PM Modi wrote on Twitter.
