Customs Preventive sleuths are conducting raids across multiple locations in Kerala to curb illegal vehicle imports from Bhutan, officials said on Tuesday.
The operation, codenamed “Operation Numkhor,” aims to track down individuals bringing vehicles into India using fake registrations to evade taxes.
Among the locations being raided are the residences of Malayalam actors Prithviraj and Dulquer Salmaan.
An official at the Customs Preventive Commissionerate said the documents of their vehicles are being examined.
The raids are progressing simultaneously in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, and Malappuram. Customs officials noted that the action follows instances of high-end vehicles being brought from Bhutan as second-hand cars without paying tax. There are around 15 such violations under investigation.
In the Bhutanese language, “Numkhor” means “vehicle,” reflecting the focus of the operation on curbing illegal imports.
