Not once or twice... money stolen 105 times from Ram Temple: SIT

Ayodhya: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing alleged financial irregularities involving offerings and donations at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi temple is expected to submit its investigation report to the court by September 25.

The probe was initiated following allegations that money received as donations at the temple had been illegally siphoned off. An FIR was registered against eight accused at the Ram Janmabhoomi police station in Ayodhya on June 25.

As part of the investigation, the SIT examined CCTV footage, witness statements, bank records and mobile data. Its scrutiny of CCTV footage from the counting room at the temple’s PFC building reportedly uncovered 105 instances in which money was allegedly taken away secretly without authorisation. Investigators also found that several other individuals may have assisted in the alleged acts. Eight accused were identified from CCTV footage and other evidence, and their bank deposits and property details were examined as well.

The SIT also checked records and receipts linked to 803 valuables kept in a State Bank of India locker and found no irregularities. However, 86 valuables for which receipts had not been issued were separately identified and examined.

The probe additionally covered claims surrounding 944.411 kg of white metal described as silver. Investigators found no irregularities regarding the 200-kg and 38.288-kg silver bars, silver bells, and Charan Padukas.

By September 14, the SIT had recorded statements from 173 witnesses, including trust officials, accounts staff, bank personnel, security guards, CCTV operators and chartered accountants. The Supreme Court has directed that a copy of the chargesheet be submitted, with the next hearing scheduled for November 2.
