New Delhi: NCERT has contacted all 38 buyers of its controversial Class 8 social science textbook (Exploring Society: India and Beyond, Part 2), withdrawn after Supreme Court objections, and recovered 16 copies so far, The Indian Express reportedNCERT contacts 38 buyers of withdrawn Class 8 book, recovers 16 copies.

Buyers who purchased copies from the NCERT counter on Monday were reached between Tuesday and Wednesday and asked to return them due to an “issue.” A counter staffer said an official from the NCERT publication division issued the directive, backed by a Ministry order.

“Three cases lacked contact numbers, so details were sought from banks via UPI IDs,” the staffer added. No copies were sold Tuesday, per Education Ministry sources. NCERT Director D P Saklani did not respond to requests for comment.

The book’s chapter “The Role of the Judiciary in Our Society” includes a section on judicial challenges like massive case backlogs and corruption. On Wednesday, CJI Surya Kant took strong exception, stating he would “not allow anyone on earth to play with the integrity and to defame the institution.”
