Mumbai police arrests quack, assistant for duping elderly

Mumbai: A fake doctor and his assistant were arrested in Pune for allegedly tricking an older woman of 77 in Mumbai to pay Rs 2 lakh for treating knee pain, PTI reported on Sunday.

Police arrested the quack Hanis Abdul Hamid Sheikh, known as Dr Malik, and assistant Zahid Salim Husain from the Kondhwa area of Pune on Friday, assistant inspector Swapnil Patil of Cuffe Parade police station said.

The official further said that the Mumbai-based older woman approached police in December, saying how she paid the quack money, but her ailment continued. An investigation into the matter found that the doctor was a fake, and an FIR was registered, naming him.

The officer said that the accused man had committed similar crimes before. The arrestees were booked under various IPC sections, including 420 (cheating) while further investigation is going on, he added.

Last month, in a similar incident, the Pimpri Chinchwad police in Pune had arrested another quack for selling fake Ayurvedic medicine for Rs 33,000 to a lady to conceive. The victim had approached the police after she had tried in vain to contact the seller when the medicine proved ineffective.
