Chennai: Tamil Nadu Police arrested eight persons and seized two handguns near Viruthachalam as they attempted to flee after allegedly attempting to murder a DMK functionary.
The incident occurred on Friday when 48-year-old Ilaiyaraja was leaving his farm to enter his vehicle.
A group of men reportedly surrounded him and launched an attack, with two of them opening fire, causing injuries to Ilaiyaraja.
The DMK functionary managed to escape the attack and flee the scene in his car.
Police initiated an investigation, forming special teams that tracked down the suspects to Gopurapuram.
The arrested individuals, identified as Adalarasu and Pugazhenthi, were found in possession of firearms and were arrested along with Vijayakumar, Surya, Venkatesan, Saravanan, Arun and Satheeswaran.
Adalarasu and Pugazhenthi were related to Rajashekhar, who reportedly had personal enmity with the family of Ilaiyaraja regarding Panchayat board elections, land transactions, and village temple ceremonies.
Ilaiyaraja is currently receiving treatment in a private hospital in Chennai.
