Modi to address the nation tonight; what is he going to speak about?

Narendra Modi is set to address the nation at 8:30 pm on Friday, the Prime Minister’s Office announced, triggering intense speculation over possible major announcements. The subject of the address remains undisclosed, but the timing — coming immediately after the dramatic defeat of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha — has heightened political dread, since he warned of the opposition of consequences, as per reports.

The Union government had pushed the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, which proposed 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies through a nationwide delimitation exercise based on the 2011 Census. The bill’s defeat, after the government failed to secure the required special majority, has been framed by the opposition as a decisive political victory. Opposition leaders described the outcome as a triumph of democratic resistance and unity against what they allege was a calculated attempt to alter India’s federal balance under the guise of women’s empowerment.

Reports in national media suggest that Modi, during a Cabinet meeting, sharply criticised the opposition for refusing to back the bill, warning that they would have to face political consequences for blocking what the government projected as a transformative reform.

However, opposition leaders have mounted an aggressive counterattack. Priyanka Gandhi accused the Centre of orchestrating a “conspiracy” to weaken India’s federal structure. She described the bill as a vehicle to push delimitation that could distort representation and undermine democratic institutions. Calling the bill’s defeat a “major victory for democracy,” she asserted that the opposition had successfully thwarted an attempt to dilute constitutional principles, adding that the ruling leadership’s visible discomfort reflected the scale of the setback.
