New Delhi: The Union Government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been tirelessly working for the welfare of poor, backwards, and deprived sections of society, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Tuesday.
He said that the Modi government's efforts were focused on protecting their human rights, PTI reports. While addressing the foundation day of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in New Delhi, Shah appreciated the work done by the body in creating awareness among people about their human rights since its inception.
Shah said that the Modi government came to power in 2014 with an absolute majority, and that was a first in a long time. Since 2014 it has been doing welfare work for the deprived sections.
He said that the Modi government provided ten crore families with toilets, a fundamental human right after it came to power. He noted that four crore families received electricity, and 13 crores received clean cooking gas connections that have helped save women and others from various diseases.
His government has built two crore houses for the poor, and another five crores will be constructed soon. Seven crore people were given financial assistance directly to their bank accounts, which were opened for the first time.
Shah further said that the Modi government had launched an ambitious scheme to provide potable water to everyone while two crore families will have clean water through the pipeline soon.
The NHRC is a statutory body formed on October 12th, 1993. It was constituted under the Protection of Human Rights Act for the promotion and protection of human rights. Shah said that the NHRC has disposed of 20 lakh cases since its inception and awarded 205 crore compensations to scores of people for violation of human rights.
