Agra: A mob attacked a tourist who came from New Delhi to visit Taj Mahal in Agra on Monday.
A footage going viral on social media showed people chasing the man with batons and rods alleging that his car ‘touched one of them’, NDTV reported.
Many Twitter users asked the Uttar Pradesh Police to arrest the men who attacked the tourist.
A CCTV footage from a sweet shop in Basai Chowki in Tajganj area of Agra showed the man seeking refuge inside while attackers rushed in.
The man was seen pleading with the mob to spare him which went unheard as they vented their fury. The brutal attack continued for several minutes.
The police informed on Twitter that they arrested five people involved in the assault and started searching for others.
Many expressed shock at the brutality, with one user tweeting that ‘These people brutally thrashed the tourist. They should also be beaten in the same way.
Another user praised the police, saying ‘Great work by Agra police department... This is why we always trust our system...agra police give us one more reason to trust our system’.
Taj Mahal, one of India’s top monuments dating back to 17 century, is visited by thousands every year.
