Serou: A Border Security Force (BSF) constable was killed during an exchange of fire with suspected Kuki miscreants at Serou in Manipur in the early hours of Tuesday.
The incident took place around 4.15 am. Constable Ranjit Yadav sustained bullet injuries and was taken to Jivan Hospital in Kakching where he was declared dead.
“On Tuesday, suspected Kuki miscreants resorted to an indiscriminate and heavy volume of firing towards BSF troops deployed at Serou Practical High School in Sugnu. During an exchange of fire between BSF troops and suspected Kuki miscreants, Constable Yadav sustained bullet injury and was evacuated to Jivan Hospital, Kakching where he was declared dead,” a BSF spokesperson said.
According to PTI reports, two Assam Rifles personnel also suffered gunshot wounds in Manipur’s Serou area, the Army said on Tuesday, June 6. The injured have been air evacuated to Mantripukhri and search operations are in progress, the Army’s SpearCorps headquartered in Dimapur said on Twitter.
According to the BSF, Ranjit Yadav was deployed at Serou Practical High School under police station Sugnu in Kakching district of Manipur.
Yadav displayed conspicuous bravery, high degree of dedication and devotion to duty during the exchange of fire when suspected Kuki miscreants resorted to an indiscriminate and heavy volume of firing towards BSF troops, the BSF said in a statement.
This comes amid a spate of violence in the state which started on May 3 after a ‘tribal solidarity march’ was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
The Manipur government on Monday extended the internet ban for five more days citing continued incidents of “arson of houses and premises”.
The Centre has announced a Commission of Inquiry, headed by former Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Ajai Lamba, to probe the Manipur violence.
