Imphal: A 20-year-old woman who was allegedly gang-raped during the Manipur riots died on January 10, awaiting justice, while not recovering from the trauma she was put through, according to reports.
The woman was kidnapped by a group of men in May 2023, died from the illness aggravated by the trauma she went through, including severe physical injuries and deep shock, from which she never recovered, NDTV reported.
The woman was able to file a complaint with the police, but only after two months of the ordeal she had gone through.
The Churachandpur-based Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) informed in a statement that the woman was kidnapped, seriously assaulted, and left to die. Though she survived the assault, severe physical injuries, deep psychological trauma, and serious uterine complications resulted in her death while she was being treated in Guwahati.
The FIR filed based on her complaint says that she was taken to a hilly area by four armed men who wore black shirts, and they took turns to rape her. It should be noted that members of the Meitei group, Arambai Tenggol, had taken arms and worn black shirts during the height of the violence.
The woman had told NDTV that the men did everything they could to her and did not give her anything to eat or drink.
It was an autorickshaw driver who took her to safety after she ran down the hill, escaping the men’s bondage, she told NDTV.
According to the woman’s mother, the woman worked at a beauty parlour in Imphal with one of their relatives.
