Mahatma Gandhi did not have a law degree but qualified to practise law, says Governor of J&K

Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha said that it is a misconception that Mahatma Gandhi had a law degree. "Mahatma Gandhi did not have a single university degree, let alone any law degree. A misconception a lot of people have."

He was making a point that people should strive for more than just a "degree education". He said Mahatma Gandhi only had a high school diploma but he was qualified to practice law. He asserted that people should not only be indulging in formal connection with a degree or what you think is education, reported ANI.

"Who would say Gandhiji was not educated? Nobody has the courage to say that. But did you know that he did not have a single university degree or qualification? There are many of us who think that Mahatma Gandhi had a law degree. No, he did not. His only qualification was a high school diploma. He qualified to practise law. He did not have a law degree…. (But) Just look how educated he was…Our Father of the Nation," said the BJP leader.

His statements come a day after AAP leader and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal asked if it is possible for a less-educated Prime Minister to build a 21st-century India. Speaking about thousands of government schools being shut down across India, he said: "The Prime Minister of India must be educated… If we had an educated PM, he would have understood the importance of schools and had opened more schools instead of shutting them down."

"I am worried that the prime minister of the country is not educated. Anyone can get him to do anything. My question is whether there is no need for an educated prime minister in the 21st century. Can a less educated PM help in building the 21st century?," he said while speaking at a public meeting at Jantar Mantar.
