Karur stampede: Prime Minister announces Rs 2 lakh compensation for victims’ families

Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of those who lost their lives in the stampede during a rally in Karur addressed by actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay. The tragedy occurred around 7.30 p.m. on Saturday at Veluswamipuram, where a massive crowd had gathered for Vijay’s political tour event.

The disaster, triggered by intense heat and a sudden crowd surge, claimed 39 lives, 17 women, 13 men, and nine children. Another 67 people were hospitalized with injuries, while 26 were treated and later discharged.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin was the first to announce relief, declaring Rs 10 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh for those injured.

Vijay, who initially faced criticism for leaving for his Chennai residence without taking part in rescue efforts, later posted a condolence message on X, expressing grief. He subsequently announced Rs 20 lakh for the families of those killed and Rs 2 lakh for the injured.

“This is an irreparable loss. No words of comfort can truly ease the pain of losing our loved ones. Yet, as a member of your family, I feel it is my duty to stand by you at this time. I therefore intend to provide ₹20 lakh each to the families of those who lost their lives and ₹2 lakh each to those who were injured and undergoing treatment. Though this sum is no match for the loss, it is my duty to stand with you in this hour of grief.”

Tamil Nadu DGP G. Venkataraman told the media that many people fainted after waiting for hours in the scorching sun without food or water while expecting Vijay’s arrival. Permission for the rally had originally been granted for between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., but announcements suggested Vijay would arrive around noon. Crowds began gathering from 11 a.m., yet Vijay only arrived at 7.40 p.m. Organizers had expected about 100,000 people, but nearly three times that number turned up, leading to the chaos.

The rally was part of Vijay’s state tour ahead of next year’s assembly elections. The second leg of the tour began in Namakkal on Saturday. Police had granted permission under strict conditions, including adhering to the schedule, avoiding damage to public property, and ensuring proper crowd control.
