Karnataka government scraps text book content that hurts brahmin sentiment

Bengaluru: Owing to complaints from the Brahmin Development Board about "insulting" contents, the Karnataka state government has made the decision to scrap certain things from the 6th standard social studies text book.

Among the "insulting" content was the mention that food scarcity arose due to fire rituals involving large offerings of food grains, ghee, milk etc. and the sacrifice of animals used by farmers. It also included that Sanskrit was the language of the priests, and that the common man could not understand it.

The Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar has directed the department to form a committee to examine such content.

He further said that this information was above the level of the students studying it and such 'provocative content' could only result in confusion amongst the children and hurt feelings in the community.
