Tamil Nadu Forest Minister K Ponmudy has issued a public apology after facing intense backlash for making controversial remarks about women and religious symbols associated with Shaivism and Vaishnavism.

The statements, made during an event organised by the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, triggered criticism across political and social circles.

Following widespread outrage and the viral circulation of the speech video, the ruling DMK took swift action. Chief Minister and DMK President M.K. Stalin removed Ponmudy from his role as the party’s deputy general secretary on April 11. His position has since been filled by Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva, who was relieved of his previous role as propaganda secretary.

In a formal statement, Ponmudy expressed deep regret and extended a heartfelt apology. “I immediately felt deep remorse for my words used in an inappropriate context. As someone who has spent years in public service, I sincerely apologise for this lapse in judgment,” he stated. He acknowledged the pain his comments may have caused and reiterated his commitment to respectful public discourse.

Despite his apology, criticism continues to mount.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), particularly its North Tamil Nadu wing, has demanded Ponmudy’s immediate removal from the state cabinet. VHP state president Andal P Chockalingam denounced the minister’s remarks as "vulgar and demeaning to Hindu religious symbols," stating that stripping Ponmudy of his party post is "mere eyewash." The VHP has announced statewide protests on April 15 to press for his dismissal.

The AIADMK also condemned Ponmudy’s comments, with party general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami labeling the speech as "indecent" and "perverted." He argued that the remarks continue a pattern of disrespect by the DMK towards women and religious communities. In response, the AIADMK women’s wing will hold a protest on April 16, demanding action against the minister.

Echoing similar sentiments, Hindu Munnani state president Kadeshwar Subramaniam also called for Ponmudy’s removal and announced a parallel statewide protest on April 15.
