Justice retd. Harish Mishra swears in as Delhi Lokayukta

New Delhi: Retired Jharkhand High Court Judge Harish Chandra Mishra has sworn in as the Lokayukta of Delhi on Wednesday. Delhi Lt Governor Anil Baijal administered the oath of office at the solemn ceremony held at the Raj Niwas here, PTI reported.

The oath of office was administered by Delhi Lt Governor Anil Baijal at a solemn ceremony held at the Raj Niwas in New Delhi.

The post of Delhi Lokayukta lay vacant for more than a year after Rewa Khetrapal retired in December 2020. A notification dated March 15, 2022, stated that Baijal had been appointed Justice (retired) Mishra as the Lokayukta. He is to holding the office for five years since his joining. He was the acting Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court.

It was in last month that Delhi's Arvind Kejriwal government submitted before the Delhi High Court that the appointment of a Lokayukta in the Union Territory was underway.

This was after public interest litigation, which sought the UT government to appoint a Lokayukta within a month, as per the poll promise the party made in 2020. The PIL alleged that hundreds of complaints on corruption lay pending in the Lokayukta office as it was vacant for more than a year.

The Opposition also targeted the party for the same for a long.

Rewa Khetrapal became Lokayukta in November 2015, and before him, it was Manmohan Sarin.
