A magistrate court in Mansa, Gandhinagar, has convicted journalist Ravi Nair in a criminal defamation case filed by Adani Enterprises Ltd and sentenced him to one year of imprisonment along with a fine.
The case stemmed from a complaint by Adani Enterprises, the flagship company of the Adani Group, which accused Nair of publishing and disseminating a series of tweets that it said contained false and defamatory statements. The company alleged that the posts were intended to harm its reputation and undermine its credibility among the public and investors.
During the trial, Adani Enterprises argued that the tweets did not constitute fair comment or legitimate criticism and instead amounted to criminal defamation. After a full-fledged trial, the court held that the company had successfully established its case.
The court found Ravi Nair guilty of criminal defamation and pronounced the sentence accordingly.
