JNU asks students to cancel the screening of BBC documentary on PM Modi

New Delhi: The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has asked the students to cancel the screening of the BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The university administration in a statement said that no prior permission for this event has been taken.

A group of students allegedly planned the screening of "India: The Modi Question" at 9 PM on Tuesday.

The JNU administration said the event may disturb the peace on campus. "This is to emphasise that such an unauthorised activity may disturb the peace and harmony of the University Campus. The concerned students/individuals are firmly advised to cancel the proposed programme."

The Indian government asked social media platforms to block access to all the links to the two-part documentary on certain aspects of the 2002 Gujarat riots. The Ministry of External Affairs said the documentary is a "propaganda piece" that lacks objectivity and reflects a colonial mindset. BBC claimed that the series has been thoroughly researched.

Opposition leaders have backed the documentary and some like Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra shared the link. "Sorry, Haven't been elected to represent the world's largest democracy to accept censorship. Here's the link. Watch it while you can," she tweeted on her official handle. Many opposition leaders called out the Centre for censoring the documentary and preventing the public from watching it.
