Aligarh: A 22-year-old Aligarh Muslim University student from Jammu and Kashmir was found dead at his rented accommodation near the campus, police said on Saturday. It is the second suspected student suicide reported at the university in less than a month.
The student was pursuing the second year of BA (Hons) in Foreign Languages, specialising in French. He was found at his accommodation in the Civil Lines area on Friday, AMU Proctor Naved Khan said.
According to officials, a note was recovered from the room in which the student expressed emotional distress and asked his parents for forgiveness. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the death.
The student had returned to Aligarh from his hometown in Jammu and Kashmir around four days before the incident, Khan said.
Earlier this month, a 19-year-old undergraduate student from Kolkata was found dead in her hostel room at AMU’s Indira Gandhi Hall. University officials had said the death was being treated as a suspected suicide.
Meanwhile, protests have continued at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi over the investigation into the death of a 31-year-old MSc Physics student last week.
Police said they received information on the morning of August 22 that a student had fallen from a building on the IIT Delhi campus. Officers from Kishangarh police station reached the campus and shifted him to the institute’s hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
Investigators said the student entered the campus through the main gate at around 8 a.m. and later went to the Lecture Hall Complex. A crime scene team and forensic experts collected evidence from the site.
No note was recovered from the spot. However, the student’s mobile phone was found and has been sent for examination as part of the investigation.
