India stresses value of skilled workers amid heated H-1B visa debate

India has reaffirmed the importance of facilitating the movement of skilled professionals between itself and the United States, highlighting the mutual benefits derived from such exchanges.

The statement comes amid an ongoing debate over the H-1B visa program, with prominent figures like Donald Trump and Elon Musk voicing their views.

Indian nationals accounted for approximately 78% of the 265,777 H-1B visas issued by the U.S. during the fiscal year ending September 30, 2023. This statistic underscores the crucial role that Indian professionals play in the U.S. technology industry.

The debate around the H-1B visa program has exposed divisions within the U.S., with some viewing it as essential for bolstering the tech sector while others argue it poses a threat to American jobs. Despite previously implementing measures to restrict the program, former President Donald Trump has expressed support for it, acknowledging its significance to the tech industry.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has been vocal in defending the program. He recently stated on social media, "The reason I'm in America along with so many critical people who built SpaceX, Tesla, and hundreds of other companies that made America strong is because of H-1B." Musk further vowed to fight for the program, calling it critical to America’s success.

Responding to the discourse, Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized the long-standing economic and technological partnership between India and the U.S. He pointed out that the mobility of skilled professionals is an integral part of this relationship, contributing significantly to economic growth and technological innovation in both countries.

"Our countries share a strong and growing economic and technological partnership, and the mobility of skilled professionals is a critical component," Jaiswal stated at a press conference. "India-U.S. economic ties benefit greatly from the technical expertise provided by these professionals, with both nations leveraging their strengths and competitive value. We aim to further deepen these ties for mutual benefit."

The ongoing discussions align with broader efforts to enhance U.S.-India cooperation. Bilateral trade between the two nations grew by 7.65% to $129 billion in 2022-23, reflecting a strengthening economic relationship. Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has already engaged with U.S. leaders, signaling India’s intent to deepen this partnership further.
