Comedian Kunal Kamra has once again found himself at the centre of political discourse after a sharply satirical remark delivered during a protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar rapidly gained traction across social media.
The comedian, long recognised for his pointed criticism of the BJP-led Union government, addressed demonstrators supporting the Cockroach Janata Party's (CJP) campaign over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination.
Speaking before a sizeable gathering, Kamra remarked in Hindi: "Pehle toh main kehna chahunga ki yeh jo sarkar hai, yeh jo kar rahi hai, yeh bahut saalon se kar rahi hai. Aur humne yeh dekha hai ki yeh bas Sita ke pati ka naam lekar, Nita ke pati ka kaam kar rahi hai."
Roughly translated, he said: "First of all, I would like to say that this government has been doing this for many years, and we have seen that it merely invokes the name of Sita's husband (Lord Ram) while carrying out the work of Nita's husband."
The remark, widely interpreted as contrasting the government's invocation of Lord Ram with an alleged inclination towards corporate interests, was greeted with laughter, applause and cheers from those assembled. Videos of the speech have since circulated extensively online, fuelling debate among supporters and critics alike.
Kamra attended the demonstration wearing a Mahatma Gandhi T-shirt, while Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad also joined the protest, lending support to students demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged examination irregularities. Azad additionally met education reformer and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has continued his indefinite hunger strike.
The CJP protest entered its 25th day on Wednesday, with organisers urging citizens to participate in a one-day mass hunger strike in solidarity with Wangchuk and students across the country.
