Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) prices in Delhi were increased by Rs 2 per kg on May 26, taking the retail price to Rs 83.09 per kg. The revised rates came into effect at 6 am and marked the fourth hike in about two weeks.
The latest revision followed earlier increases of Rs 2 on May 15, Re 1 on May 18, and another Re 1 on May 23. After the earlier hikes, CNG prices in Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad had risen to Rs 89.70 per kg, while Mumbai’s CNG price reached Rs 84 per kg. There has been no change so far in the prices of piped natural gas supplied to households or domestic LPG cylinders, India Express reported.
The repeated hikes come amid rising international crude oil prices and growing uncertainty in global energy markets. The increase is expected to impact public transport systems in cities such as Delhi and Mumbai, where many buses, taxis, and autorickshaws run on CNG.
Concerns over the Strait of Hormuz have also added pressure on fuel prices. Ongoing tensions involving the United States and Iran have raised fears of disruptions to global oil supplies through the strategically important route.
The US military reportedly carried out what it described as “self-defence” strikes in southern Iran, targeting missile launch sites and boats allegedly laying mines. These developments have further intensified uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, which has reportedly remained closed since March 1 following joint US-Israel strikes.
Global crude oil markets have remained volatile because of supply concerns linked to tensions in the Gulf region. Brent crude was trading near USD 98 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude hovered around USD 91 per barrel.
Petrol and diesel prices were also revised upward again on Monday, marking the fourth increase in less than two weeks. In Delhi, petrol prices crossed Rs 100 per litre after a hike of Rs 2.61, reaching Rs 102.12 per litre. Diesel prices rose by Rs 2.71 to Rs 95.20 per litre.
