Tension gripped the Pekuchhara area of Tripura's Panisagar subdivision after a vehicle announcing a Waz Mehfil, a traditional Islamic religious seminar, was intercepted and its occupants attacked, reportedly by members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). The incident, which occurred on December 23, sparked panic in the locality and disrupted normal movement as police and administrative officials rushed to restore order.
According to eyewitness Maulana Habib ur Rahman, a group of at least 15 individuals arriving in a vehicle displaying VHP flags stopped the announcement car and brutally assaulted the three men inside: Abdul Malik, Tasleem Uddin, and Maulana Junaid Ahmed. Rahman described the attack as unprovoked, stating it specifically targeted those organising the community programme. While local media outlet Tripura Times characterised the announcements as "unauthorised activity" lacking administrative approval, Rahman contested this, asserting that no special permission is required for such public announcements and condemning the assault by individuals with no legal authority.
Senior officials, including Sub-Divisional Magistrate Sushanta Debbarma, arrived quickly at the scene to control the situation, though no official police statement regarding arrests or the registration of an FIR has been released. The identities of the specific attackers remain unconfirmed, and the current medical condition of the assaulted men is not yet known. Residents have expressed fear and anger following the violence, alleging the attack was designed to intimidate the Muslim community and curb their freedom to conduct religious gatherings.
