Gave permission to AIMIM's Tipu Sultan rally: police tell high court

New Delhi: Following the Bombay High Court’s intervention in Pune Police refusing to grant permission to a rally by the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) to commemorate the birth anniversaries of Tipu Sultan and Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, the Police submitter before the court on Tuesday that it has granted the same. The rally has been scheduled to be conducted on December 24, Bar and Bench reported.

The high court bench of justices Revati Mohite Dere and PK Chavan, who were hearing a petition from the Pune district president of the AIMIM, however, advised the organisation to conduct a procession adhering to the terms and conditions.

The court came down to Pune Police for citing ‘law and order’ as the reason for not granting permission and asked them what the law and order situation was.

“What is this law and order situation? You are anticipating that something will happen. Law and order is your prerogative. Every time you raise the issue of law and order, when will you change your mindset?” the court said

It was AIMIM city president Faiyaz Shaikh who sought permission to organise a rally commemorating the birth anniversaries of Tipu Sultan and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, which was denied permission by the police which was after they received an objection letter from another community.

This made the AIMIM move to the Bombay High Court. The Wire reported that the court directed the police to chart a route for the rally.
