Gang rape: Coimbatore court awards 3 men life sentences

Coimbatore: A Mahila Court in Coimbatore on Saturday sentenced three men to life imprisonment in connection with the gang rape of a 20-year-old college student in 2025. The verdict was delivered by judge (in charge) V. Sundararaj, who found all three accused guilty and imposed punishment under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The convicts were identified as T Karuppasamy alias Satheesh, 30, his brother T Kaleeswaran alias Karthik, 21, both natives of Singampunari in Sivaganga district, and their distant relative M Guna alias Thavasi, 20, from Madurai district. The three were brought before the court at around 1.30 p.m., after which the judge pronounced the sentence.

The court awarded life imprisonment to the trio for the offence of gang rape under Section 70(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The provision prescribes rigorous imprisonment of not less than 20 years, which may extend to imprisonment for the remainder of a convict’s natural life, along with a fine. Apart from the gang rape charge, the court also convicted the accused under seven different sections related to the crime.

According to the prosecution, the incident took place on the intervening night of November 2 and 3, 2025, in a deserted area near Coimbatore International Airport. The survivor, a college student aged 20, had gone there with her 25-year-old boyfriend and was seated with him inside a car in an open area along the mud road connecting Brindhavan Nagar and SIHS Colony.

Investigators said the three accused first attacked the woman’s boyfriend before committing the sexual assault. The boyfriend later filed the complaint that led to the registration of the case.

Public Prosecutor B Jisha said the court also directed the Tamil Nadu government to provide financial compensation to the victims. The survivor will receive ₹7 lakh, while her boyfriend, who was assaulted during the incident and filed the complaint, will be given ₹2 lakh.

The case was investigated by Inspector S. Latha with assistance from Inspector R. Arjunkumar, the Station House Officer of the Peelamedu police station.
