Gaming addiction: Teen kills father, sister & grievously wounds mother

Koppal/Karnataka: A 17-year-old boy allegedly killed his father and elder sister, critically injured his mother and then attempted to take his own life in a shocking incident in Karnataka’s Koppal district late Saturday night, The Indian Express reported.

The attack took place at Ayodhya village in Gangavathi taluk at around 10.30 pm. The victims were identified as Venkata Naidu, 45, a supervisor at a private school, and his 19-year-old daughter Pragathi, both of whom died from stab injuries. Naidu’s wife, Soujanya, 38, survived the attack but sustained serious injuries and remains under treatment in the hospital. The minor accused is also undergoing treatment.

According to the complaint filed by Naidu’s father, who was present in the house along with his wife, the family had dinner together before the incident. A loud noise was later heard from a room that had been locked from the inside. When family members and neighbours forced the door open, they found all four covered in blood.

Police said the boy had only minor injuries while the others had suffered severe stab wounds. Investigators believe the teenager attacked his family members before attempting suicide, which was unsuccessful.

Based on the complaint, the Gangavathi Rural Police registered a case under Sections 103 (murder) and 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the teenager was allegedly addicted to mobile gaming and frequently became aggressive when interrupted while playing. Police also said he had reportedly been demanding money from his father, who had refused his requests.

The motive behind the attack is still under investigation. Authorities are questioning family members and examining the circumstances that led to the brutal violence, which has shocked residents of the village.
