New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday began a two-day meeting with Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) from all states and union territories to review preparations for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The meeting, being held at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) in Dwarka, New Delhi, will conclude on Thursday after the morning session. Following the discussions, the Commission is expected to decide on launching the nationwide voter roll revision exercise.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vineet Joshi, along with Deputy Election Commissioners and other senior officials, are attending the review.
According to officials, the agenda includes assessing the compliance of directions issued during the previous meeting held on September 10, which detailed preparatory steps for the SIR rollout.
During that earlier meeting, the ECI had directed state CEOs to map as many electors as possible to existing voter lists to reduce the need for voters to resubmit documents.
Sources said the current session will also cover administrative matters and evaluate the progress made by state election officials on tasks assigned last month. The Commission is expected to set specific timelines and targets during the deliberations.
The discussions will primarily focus on initiating the Special Intensive Revision across the country by the end of this year. Officials are also likely to decide whether the exercise should be conducted simultaneously nationwide or in two phases, factoring in regional variations such as weather conditions, farming cycles, school examinations, and administrative logistics.
This marks the second such meeting of Chief Electoral Officers within a span of just over a month.
