DMK nominates MM Abdullah as candidate for Rajya Sabha bypoll from Tamil Nadu

The ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu on Sunday announced M M Abdullah as its candidate for Rajya Sabha bypoll from the state. The election was necessitated due to the vacancy caused by the death of AIADMK's A Mohammedjan in March this yea

By nominating Abdullah to fill the vacancy created by the death of Mohammedjan, the ruling DMK has opted to nominate a Muslim candidate to retain the minority support.

In a statement, party president and Chief Minister M K Stalin has announced the candidature of Abdullah. A former DMK youth wing functionary, Abdullah is an young and upcoming DMK leader from Tirumayam in Pudukottai district.

Mr. Abdullah was part of the party's student wing and was  made the joint secretary of the party's NRI wing in January this year.

With DMK having a majority on its own, Abdullah will most likely be elected unopposed to the upper house.

"Abdullah is a very active member on social media and is very close to the young family members of our party president (M K Stalin). He is Udhayanidhi's choice," reported TOI quoting a source in DMK.

The bypoll to fill up the vacancy will be held on September 13, the Election Commission had said on August 17.

Mohammedjan's term was to otherwise end on July 24, 2025.

The notification for the bypoll will be issued on August 24.
