Delhi Police appeals to locals to skip CJP protest at Jantar Mantar

New Delhi: Delhi Police has stepped up efforts to discourage residents from joining the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) proposed protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10, with officials reaching out to local communities ahead of the demonstration.

According to reports, police have been holding meetings with paying guest accommodation owners, market associations and Resident Welfare Associations in parts of the capital, urging them to help prevent large gatherings between October 7 and 10.

During one such meeting in the Chandni Mahal area, residents were briefed about maintaining law and order. A social activist who attended the meeting said police advised people against participating in the protest, citing concerns over the situation in central Delhi.

Some residents reportedly raised the issue of the constitutional right to protest, while police officials pointed to legal restrictions governing public demonstrations.

Police have also asked shopkeepers in the area to consider closing earlier than usual to avoid crowds. Residents have sought assurances that authorities will not resort to force to shut businesses, referring to alleged incidents during an earlier protest in July.

The October 10 demonstration is being organised by the CJP along with student and youth groups. The protesters are seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Delhi Police has denied permission for the proposed protest, citing security and law-and-order concerns.

CJP spokesperson Saurav Das has criticised the police outreach and maintained that the group intends to proceed with a peaceful demonstration.
