In a significant cyber heist, cybercriminals hacked into the servers of Nainital Bank's Noida branch, transferring Rs 16.5 crore to 89 different accounts.
The criminals accessed the bank's Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) channel by compromising the manager's login credentials, with the theft occurring between June 16 and June 20.
The incident came to light when the bank's IT manager, Sumit Kumar Srivastava, filed a complaint at the cyber crime police station. Srivastava reported that discrepancies were discovered while tallying the balance sheet for June. During a routine audit on June 17, a shortfall of Rs 3,60,94,020 was noticed in the RTGS balance sheet. Further investigation revealed that the balance sheet could not be reconciled for several days, indicating fraud.
ACP Cyber Crime Vivek Ranjan Rai informed NDTV that a case has been registered based on the complaint from the IT manager. He confirmed that Rs 16.5 crore had been withdrawn by hacking the manager's credentials and the bank's server during the specified period. A team has been formed to investigate the matter.
