Cybercriminals use SIR to cheat people: police issue advisory

Hyderabad: The police have warned people against cybercriminals cheating them in the name of ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR), Siasat.com reported.

The advisory has cautioned against falling prey to suspicious social media and text messages providing ‘links’ to the enumeration form.

These messages usually come with a warning that names will be deleted from voter list unless the form is filled out, before providing a link to the ‘form’.

Clicking these links could lead to next level where the user is asked to provide one-time password (OTP), then a processing fee.

The entire process is intended to steal confidential information and money.

The advisory directs people to contact Booth Level Officer (BLO) for revision and rely on official government websites for SIR or voter card-related updates.

Alongside SIR process is free of charge, the Election Commission does not seek OTPs, Aadhaar, PAN, bank details or any personal information through calls or messages, according to the advisory.

As further precaution, authorities have instructed people to verify secure URLs and exercise caution at cyber café by removing browser history, cache, and avoiding auto-save options.
