New Delhi: Modern-day Savarkars and Jinnahs are continuing their efforts to divide the nation, said Congress lawmaker MP Jairam Ramesh reacting to a video released by the BJP narrating the party's version of the events that caused India's partition in 1947.
The seven-minute flick, featuring archival footage and visuals of partition accompanied by evocative music, reportedly portrays Jawaharlal Nehru as having given in to the pressures of Muhammad Ali Jinnah-led Muslim League that wanted to create a separate state.
The video appeared as India marks its second "Partition Horrors Remembrance Day" after Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year declared the 14 of August to be the day to remind the nation of the sufferings and sacrifices of Indians during partition, according to NDTV.
Outraged by the BJP's attack on Jawaharlal Nehru, Ramesh said the "real intent" of the PM to observe the day is to "use the most traumatic historical events as fodder for his current political battles".
Prime Minister Nehru appeared throughout the video while the voiceover recounted the horrors of partition.
Also the video questions how Cyril John's map for the partition that divided Punjab and Bengal nearly in weeks was allowed to happen.
The BJP tweeted that people who had no knowledge of Indian cultural heritage civilization, values and pilgrimages marked out the border between people living together for centuries, according to the report.
Further the tweet asked where were those people who had the responsibility of fighting against these divisive forces.
Jairam Ramesh flayed BJP saying that the partition cannot be "misused" to fuel hate and prejudice.
Countering the BJP's version of events causing partition, Ramesh said RSS ideologue Savarkar originated the two nation theory.
Also, the founder of Jan Sangh, Shyama Prasad Mookherjee, championed the the Partition of Bengal against the wishes of Sarat Chandra Bose, the report said.
